Here are some of the contenders for today's biggest...news...of...the...day...
- A look into the stiffer restrictions the FCC is proposing for Sirius Satellite Radio (SIRI) and XM Satellite Radio (XMSR)...
- An upbeat earnings report from Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (ENER) that has its stock up more than 25% to a new annual high...
- Optimism on semiconductor equipment makers...MEMC Materials (WFR) and Applied Materials (AMAT) are mentioned with regard to their exposure to the solar energy market...Teradyne (TER), KLA-Tencor (KLAC) and WFR are singled out as "buys"...
- Better-than-expected sales number from Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) and Costco Wholesale Corp. (COST)...
- Skepticism that argues "improved April sales" don't "indicate a rebound in consumer spending..."

- A look into the "extremely complex topic" of biofuels...
- An argument that Microsoft Corp (MSFT) should "kill Vista instead of Windows XP..."
While those are all stories worth watching, I think it is obviously clear that the biggest news is this pair of stories -
- Pa. women robbed of purses show police suspect's photo - "Police had no trouble tracking down a suspect in the robbery of three women at a Bucks County convenience store, because the women had taken the man's picture a short time earlier at a bar...The women were taking photos of each other when Smith jumped in front of the camera..."
- Firm Handshakes Help Land Jobs - "In a new study, scientists put 98 students through mock job interviews with businesspeople. The students also met with trained handshake raters who, unbeknownst to the students, rated their grips...Students who got high handshake marks were also rated most hireable..."
Okay...here is a tip. If you are the type of person that might even consider robbery, you shouldn't jump in front of cameras!!!!
As far as the second story goes, it wasn't chosen because of the notion that a firm handshake can help you land a job. I know I heard that advice a long time ago. The reason it was deemed "biggest news" worthy is the blurb below...
"...met with trained handshake raters..."
There are trained handshake raters!?!?!?! Are you kidding me? Is that a four-year degree or more of an on-the-job training/apprenticeship type gig? Do they also rate other things like high fives? The wave? I am abuzz with questions...
