Here are some of the contenders for today's biggest...news...of...the...day...
- Disappointing news from Fannie Mae (FNM)...
- A look into why the "bottom didn't fall out of" Yahoo's (YHOO) shares...
- Better-than-expected earnings from Molson Coors Brewing Co (TAP)...
- Upbeat comments from DivX, Inc. (DIVX) that has the company's stock up more than 15%...
- Job cuts at UBS AG (UBS)...
- A call for $200 oil...
- Earnings from Anadarko Petroleum Corp. (APC)...
- A lowered forecast from Joy Global Inc (JOYG)...
While those are all stories worth watching, I think it is obviously clear that the biggest story is this - Fla. Teacher Accused Of Wizardry ...according to the article, substitute teacher Jim Piculas lost his job because of "a magic trick where a toothpick disappears and then reappears...he then got a call from the supervisor of teachers, saying he'd been accused of wizardry..."
When I first heard of this story, my initial reaction was - oh my, someone could get turned into a newt! Luckily it looks like none of the children were newtified. But I bet it was a close call. (For the record, I was only joking when I said life should imitate Monty Python and the Holy Grail.)
Also, I need to note that yesterday's "biggest news" post spurred a couple of comments...
Mike said -
"Hey, Nick! Great posts as usual. Tho you neglected to mention the biggest news of the weekend, IRON MAN! The flick took in 100 million US, 200 mil worldwide, second highest for a non-sequel ever. And of course it's related to finance because the hero is the CEO of a publicly-traded company, so how's that for a tie-in? Plus Marvel's stock just hit an all-time high on the news... (I know new Dads don't go out to movies but let's be fair...) Have a great week--you're still our stock market superhero"
And Brent offered -
"Nick, I, too, am a bit myphed by the tea thing. I just don't get the hype. However, if it is anything like how I feel toward buffalo wings, I can start to understand. If I am going to die a painful, awful death I would prefer to have wing sauce stains at the corners of my mouth, watering eyes, a runny nose, and a satisfied grin on my face. Does that help any?"
I must admit that Mike brings up a point I failed to mention yesterday - the action in Marvel Entertainment, Inc. (MVL). The stock did make today's unusual stock volume scan as it surged higher. What is interesting is that the Street is still somewhat on the sidelines. According to Zacks, only 5 of 10 analysts rank the stock with a "buy" rating.
As far as Brent's comment goes...I am not sure what to say other than I guess it is good to know what you want...
