Here are some of the contenders for today's biggest...news...of...the...day...

  • Better-than-expected earnings from Sohu.com Inc (SOHU)...
  • Kirk Kerkorian's purchase of Ford Motor (F) shares...
  • The resignations of both E-Trade Financial Corp's (ETFC) chief financial officer and the company's general counsel...
  • A threat to Google (GOOG) as the increasing popularity of cell phone browsing means less ads served...
  • A look into the Starbucks' (SBUX) customer experience with the suggestion that what customers want "is not a richer experience, but a cheaper one..."[note - for more on SBUX see this article and video...]
  • A buyout of Wrigley (WWY) by Mars Inc. and Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (BRK)...
  • Earnings from RadioShack Corp (RSH)...
  • Inline earnings from Verizon Communications (VZ)...
  • A look into how fix "Wall Street's money-making machine..."
  • An article that says "satellite is sexy again..."
  • A look into "the dangers of ethanol..."

While those are all stories worth watching, I think it is obviously clear that the biggest news has to do with the stories below -

No matter how I tried, I couldn't get myself to paste the entire title of the second article. I normally wouldn't even post such a thing but I thought the two stories were a good illustration of how both science and the government have tackled all the big issues impacting us and now have time to focus on the smaller concerns. At least I assume all the big issues have already been tackled. Unless of course there are those who are still concerned they may be the next victims of a Viking sacrifice.

I also thought the story below was worth noting...

  • Malawi jails burglar breaking into prison - "A court in Malawi handed down a 13-year jail term to a criminal who broke back into the prison where he already served time to steal guns and other equipment..."
At first glance I was assumed this was just another addition to Friday's post about criminals making questionable decisions. However, note these two lines...
"Witala Soko, 37, broke into district's prison office earlier this month, days after being released from the same jail..."
"Soko stole two rifles, three pairs of handcuffs and a police communications radio, but was arrested while trying to sell the radio..."
I could be off here but it seems that he was "successful" at breaking into the prison and only caught later? At this point I think the focus should not be on the criminal but on the prison! I suppose that any place could be robbed but I would have thought that a building designed for the sole purpose of security (which also happens to be filled with security personnel) might be a bit more...well...secure...
