Here are some of the contenders for today's biggest...news...of...the...day...

  • A bigger-than-expected loss from Merrill Lynch (MER)...
  • A smaller-than-expected profit from Nokia Corp. (NOK)...
  • Earnings from eBay Inc (EBAY)...
  • A look into what Google (GOOG) is expected to say during their earnings report tonight...
  • A look into carbon trading which is "the business of buying and selling rights to pollute the atmosphere with carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases..."
  • An article that says "More Shocks for Stocks?"
  • Earnings from Pfizer Inc. (PFE)...
  • Earnings from TD Ameritrade Holding Corp (AMTD)...
  • Arrests at plants operated by Pilgrim's Pride (PPC)...
  • Cutbacks at Harley-Davidson (HOG)...

While those are all stories worth watching, I think it is obviously clear that the biggest story, courtesy of Bill (who loves nothing more than to prove me wrong), is this - German whizzkid got it wrong: NASA...this article is in response to yesterday's "biggest news" which said - "A 13-year-old German schoolboy corrected NASA's estimates on the chances of an asteroid colliding with Earth..."

According to today's article, "the amazing story of the whizzkid versus the space bureaucracy turned out to be wrong, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration said...experts at the agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California had no doubts about their calculations...for the very low probability (1 in 45,000) of an Earth impact by the asteroid Apophis in 2036..."

So...it looks like the real moral of the story here is that you can't trust everything you read on the internet. Of course, if that really is true, then how do we know that today's story is really the "true" one. For that matter, if you really can't trust everything you read on the internet then how do you know that I didn't just make all of this up? How do you know that I even exist? I am sure that everyone has heard the infinite monkey theorem. Perhaps I am simply the monkey who couldn't quite get Shakespeare to flow?!?!?!?

Okay...okay...okay...sorry about that...minor monkey panic attack...

In response to yesterday's story Brent said - "Nick, You've given us possibly the most comprehensive look into the mind of Nick Perry that we've seen to date. I thought it was never going to end. Interesting, though." I am afraid of what he is going to say today...

On the bright side, it seems that we are back to a 1 in 45,000 chance of Apophis causing indefinitely darkened skies. Unless, of course, today's rebuttal is just a giant cover-up until the NASA people move to all the good hiding places...they are geniuses after all...
